The Elk swimming team qualified for state in six events, a program record, while placing second in the Section 8AA meet Friday and Saturday in Alexandria.

The Elk River-Zimmerman-Spectrum co-op rolled up 400 points, second behind Brainerd, which had 448.5, in the seven-team meet.

Aaron Schwab, Elk sophomore, was named outstanding swimmer of the meet. Schwab, Elk senior Friend Bechtel, and junior Collin Krueger all advanced to state in three events. Krueger set a team record and Schwab set a section record.

“This is more events than we’ve ever had a state,” said longtime coach Denise Eidem. “We brought home 28 medals for placing in the top eight, and we won five events.

“We though we should have won the championship. We swam great, but Brainerd swam even better. And they had four divers and we didn’t have divers, but they still would have won.”

Another award for the Elks was Randy Doesken being named section assistant coach of the year.

Krueger was champion in the 200 and 500 freestyle races, and broke the Elk record in the 500 with a time of 4:56.94. That record of 4:56.42 by Ben Nicka had stood since 1997. Krueber won the 200 in 1:48.60.

Schwab  broke the section meet record in winning backstroke in 54.34 and also won the individual medley in 2:02.52.

Bechtel, a senior who moved her from Idaho this year, won the 100 freestyle in 48.94 while placing second behind Schwab in the backstroke.

Those three and junior Jacob Christy won the 400 freestyle relay in 3:59.13.

The state meet will be held Friday and Saturday at the University of Minnesota starting 6 p.m.

The other member of the co-op, Rogers, competed in Section 1A at Richfield. Trevor Springer of Rogers placed

8th in butterfly 59.25 and 9th in breaststroke with 1:07.23. Nick Kopp 15th in backstroke 1:08.51.
