Hockey: Elks ousted by Duluth East 5-1
Elk River’s hockey season has been ended by Duluth East for the third straight year.
The top-seeded Greyhounds ousted the Elks 5-1 in the Section 7AA semifinals on Saturday evening at Amsoil Arena in Duluth.
The Elks finished 11-13-1. Duluth East (19-5) faces Grand Rapids in the finals on Thursday evening.
The Elks had lost to Duluth East by just 2-1 during the regular season, and led 1-0 after one period of the sectional game on a goal by Matt Eilertson, assisted by Nash Bleyhl.
Howver, Nate Repensky and Jake Randolph scored for the Greyhounds in the second period, and Conner Valasano, Trevor Olson and Luke Renier (power play) did the same in the third period.
The Greyhounds fired 50 shots at Elk goalie Anders Franke, while JoJo Jeanetta stopped 20 of 21 for Duluth East.
The last two years, the Elks have lost to Duluth East in the section finals.
