Hockey: Elk boys stymie Forest Lake 2-0, face Duluth East

Anders Franke made 33 saves as the Elk River Elks opened playoffs with a 2-0 victory over Forest Lake on Tuesday evening at home.

Robby Pullar got the Elks on the board 6:02 into the game with a goal assisted by Andrew Zerban and Garrett Aldrich.

Mitch Kierstad made it 2-0 with a goal 7:42 into the second period, assisted by Nick McCormack and Michael Katchmark.

Franke was busy throughout as the Rangers outshot the Elks 33-26 and especially in the third period when the count was 14-7.

Paige Skoog made 24 saves for Forest Lake which finished 9-12-4.

The No. 4 seeded Elks (11-13-1) now face No. 1 seed Duluth East (20-5), the defending champion, on Saturday at noon in Duluth.

The other semifinal will have Grand Rapids (22-2-3) taking on Cloquet-Esko-Carleton (17-9) at 2 p.m.

Duluth East beat Cambridge-Isanti 11-0, Grand Rapids beat St. Francis 7-2, and C-E-C beat Andover 2-1.
