Hockey: Elk boys tip Andover 2-0, finish fifth; playoffs next
The Elk River Elks won their conference finale 2-0 over the Andover Huskies there Saturday afternoon and finished fifth.
The Elks outshot the Huskies 33-13, with Ryan Heid scoring shorthanded in the second period, and Nash Bleyhl making it 2-0 with a goal in the third period. Mitch Kierstad and Matt Eilertson, respectively, assisted those goals.
Andover was 0-for-6 on power plays and the Elks 0-for-1.
Anders Franke made 13 saves in his third shutout of the season and second against Andover. Chase Perry made 31 saves for Andover (9-14).
The Elks finished fifth among 11 teams in the Northwest Suburban Conference with a 9-7-1 record.
Elks seeded 4th in section
The Elks (11-13-1 overall) are seeded No. 4 in the Section 7AA tournament and will host No. 5 Forest Lake on Tuesday at 7 p.m.
The other pairings are No. 8 Cambridge-Isanti at No. 1 Duluth East, No. 7 St. Francis at No. 2 Grand Rapids, and No. 6 Andover at No. 3 Cloquet.
Semifinals will be held Saturday, Feb. 26, noon and 2 p.m., at Armsoil Arena in Duluth, with finals March 3 at 7:30 p.m.
