The Rogers Royals stuck with No. 5 ranked St. Cloud Apollo until the final half-minute but the Eagles held them off 68-63 on Saturday evening at Rogers.
The Royals (14-8) trimmed a 12-point deficit late in the half down to three points after scoring twice off turnovers while Apollo missed two free shots on one-and-one’s.
Apollo (18-4) stayed in front, though, getting two clinching free shots from Ibrahim Abukar.
Abukar, a swift, shifty guard, netted 17 points, while center Simon Krych had 16, forward Blake Maslonkowski 15 and guard Derek Steve 10 for the Eagles.
Center Michael Schreiber and forward Rory Donovan laid in 16 points each for Rogers, with guard R.J. Dean adding 13 and forwardTrevor Morlock 10.
The Royals will host Cambridge-Isanti on Tuesday.
