City OKs 4-way stop at 193rd and Xavier
A four-way stop will be installed at Xavier Street and 193rd Avenue in Elk River.
The city has been receiving calls about poor sight distance and unsafe conditions at the intersection.
City Engineer Justin Femrite reviewed the intersection and determined that it falls short of the minimum sight distance identified in the Minnesota Department of Transportation Road Design Manual.
The minimum sight distance for a driver stopped at a stop sign to safely turn left onto a roadway not controlled by a stop sign is 400 feet. Femrite found that for a driver northbound on Xavier Street trying to turn left onto 193rd
Avenue the maximum sight distance is 340 feet to the west. That drops to 190 feet when snow obstructs views.
He recommended the intersection become a four-way stop and the council agreed to do so.
