McKernan promoted to patrol sergeant

Darren McKernan has been promoted to patrol sergeant in the Elk River Police Department, effective Feb. 21. The promotion was recommended by Police Chief Brad Rolfe and unanimously approved Monday, Feb. 14 by the Elk River City Council.
There were 10 internal applicants for the position.
This is the latest in a series of police department promotions set into motion with the retirement of Police Chief Jeff Beahen in November.
McKernan replaces Ron Nierenhausen, who was promoted to captain after Rolfe was named chief.
McKernan has been working as a juvenile liaison officer. He will be sworn in as sergeant at an upcoming City Council meeting.
He has worked for the Elk River Police Department since 1999.
