The Elk swimming team finished a strong regular season with a rousing dual meet against Monticello on Tuesday evening at home and came up short as the Magic pulled out a 96-90 win.

“Monticello a top ten team in Class A every year. They beat us by 20 last year, so we did better this year. We did beat them in an invitational,” said coach Denise Eidem. “We had some good swims, but not enough to beat a pretty good team. What really hurt us was diving, where they went 1-2-3.”

The Elk River-Zimmerman-Rogers-Spectrum co-op finished the regular season with a 6-2 record in dual meets plus three invitational wins. They’ll now have two weeks to prepare for sectionals.

Paul Fair won the butterfly and 200 freestyle for Monticello. Jack Fair took the 50 free, Jake Larch won the breaststroke, and Max Mason led the 1-2-3 sweep in diving. Monticello won all three relays. The Elks were 2-3 in the 200 and 400 freestyle relays.

In a swift  200 freestyle race, Paul Fair won in 1:47.87, and Elk junior Collin Krueger was a close second with a personal-best 1:48.01 that’s only a quarter second off the school record.

Elk firsts were earned by Aaron Schwab in the medley and backstroke, Friend Bechtel in the 100 free and Krueger in the 500 free.

The Elks needed to finish 1-3 in the final event, the 400 freestyle relay, to win, and almost pulled it off. Their “A” relay team was a half-second behind Monticello so the Elks finished 2-3.

It was Senior Night and the last home meet for those Elks — Friend Bechtel, Joe Held, Andy Lee, Casey Lee,   Aaron Ling, Ryan Pokorny, A.J. Schlee, Peter Schultz, and Dan Webster.

The Elk River-Zimmeran-Spectrum swimmers will compete for state berths at Section 8AA in Alexandria  on Feb. 25-26. A handful of Rogers athletes will compete in Section 2A at Richfield on Feb. 24 and 26.
