Hockey: Elk girls are top seed in sectional

Elk River is seeded No. 1 in the Section 7AA girls hockey tournament and will open Thursday at home against No. 8 Cambridge-Isanti.

The Elks are 17-8 overall, and 4-0 against section rivals, having beaten Iron Range teams Proctor-Hermanton-Marshall, Duluth, Cloquet and Grand Rapids-Greenway.

The Elks were top-seeded last year, too, but lost to Proctor-Hermtown-Marshall in the finals.

If the Elks win Thursday, they will have another home game Saturday. The finals will be played Wednesday, Feb. 16, in Forest Lake.

The Elks have not played Cambridge-Isanti (6-17-1).

The Elks-Bluejackets winner will face the winner of No. 5 Duluth (8-15-1) at No. 4 Proctor-Hermantown-Marshall (14-9-2).

The other bracket’s pairings are No. 7 St. Francis (8-15-2) at No. 2 Cloquet-Esko-Carleton (14-9-1), and No. 6 Forest Lake (5-17-3) at No. 3 Grand Rapids-Greenway (12-9-3).
