Hockey: Rebels’ late surge ties Elk boys 2-2

Elk River had to settle for a 2-2 tie with Champlin Park at home Saturday after giving up two goals in the last two minutes, 14 seconds of regulation time.

After a scoreless first period, Andrew Zerban got the Elks on the board at 12:15 of the second period, assisted by Alexander Miller.

Ryan Jaremko gave the Elks a 2-0 lead with a goal at 6:29 of the third, assisted by Mitch Kierstad and Jared McLaughlin.

But Garrett Van Tuyl scored for Champlin Park at 13:44, assisted by Travis Swan, and Terry Hennen got another one into the net at the 16:00 mark, with John McDonald assisting.

With a scoreless overtime, the Elks and Rebels both had their first tie of the season. The Elks are 7-7-1 in the NWSC and 9-11-1 overall. Champlin Park is 6-8-1 in conference and 9-10-1 overall.

The Elks outshot the Rebels 36-29. On power plays the Elks were 0-for-8 and the Rebels 0-for-5.

Elk goalie Anders Franke made 27 saves and Rebel goalie Tyler Nelson made 34.
