Neal E. Nichols, 85, of Bovey, Minn., formerly of Elk River, died Monday, Jan. 31, 2011, at Grand Itasca Clinic and Hospital in Grand Rapids.
He was born in 1926 to William and Stella Nichols in Minneapolis. He moved to Elk River in 1939, where he graduated from high school, and in 1943 he joined the U.S. Navy and served as a Navy medic with the 9th Marine Regiment during World War II. They made landing in Bougainville, Guam and Iwo Jima.
In 1946, Mr. Nichols was discharged from the Navy and in 1948 he joined the U.S. Army and served in the Korean conflict as a master sergeant until his discharge in 1953.
He married Shirley Jean Ellingson on June 18, 1955, in Mason City, Iowa. He worked for the Cornelius Co. in Anoka from 1960–1971, then moved to Grand Rapids in 1971 and worked as a manager for CWDC until his retirement in 1988.
Mr. Nichols loved golfing and fishing and was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, American Legion and the Fraternal Order of Eagles.
The funeral service was Friday, Feb. 4, at the Rowe Funeral Home in Grand Rapids. The Rev. Loren Fiet officiated. Inurnment will be in Lakeview Cemetery in Coleraine, next to his wife, Shirley, at a later date.
Survivors include his son, Randy (Sue), of Bovey; grandchildren, Randii Kae, Tanja (Eric), and Ryan; great-grandchildren, Aubrie and Brody; step-daughter, Jean; brother, Bill; and sister, Barbara.
