Basketball: Elk girls sink 30 free throws, beat Cards 64-54

Elk River and Coon Rapids got into a sloppy foul-fest punctuated by 51 fouls, with the Elks doing a better job capitalizing, on Thursday evening.

The Elks pulled out a 64-54 win at home, with five double-digit scorers.

The Elks were fouled 31 times, and cashed 30 of 43 free shots. The Cardinals were fouled 20 times and were shaky at the line, 16-for-36.

Elk senior guard Kayti Hanson made 13 of 17 freebies and totaled 15 points, not getting a field goal until two minutes remained.

Annie Sizen hitĀ  14 points with four 3-pointers, Jordyn Sohns 13 with 6-for-8 free throws, Victoria Jenson 12 with 4-for-6 free throw, and Makenzie Frericks 10 with 4-for-6 free throws. The only other scorer was Mikala Macomber with 5.

Three Elks fouled out — Jenson, Macomber, and Jenna Cielocha.

Caitlyn Happke, senior post, led Coon Rapids with 17 points. Junior guard Brianna Havelka added 11. Two Cardinals fouled out.

The Elks are 7-8 in conference and 11-10 overall, including an earlier 52-51 loss to Coon Rapids. The CardinalsĀ  are 4-10 in conference and 4-13 overall.

The Elks will play at Osseo on Monday evening.
