Gymnastics: Elks eclipse old rival Centennial, extend streak to 23

by Bruce Strand, Sports editor

The last team to defeat the Elk gymnasts was Centennial, two seasons and 23 meets ago.

With the Cougars visiting Thursday evening, the Elks assembled their best performance of the season and the win streak lives on.

The Elk River-Zimmerman-Rogers co-op won 142.2 to 133.85, with Sabrina Hoover winning all four events, and the top four all-arounders being Elks.

The Elks, beset by injuries and illnesses all season, had all their gymnasts healthy for the first time, which contributed to their breaking 140 for the first time.

“It was so much fun to have everybody back,” said coach Jenn Bartlett. “We got 142 and there’s room for improvement.”

Centennial beat the Elks 134.2 to 132.975 in their gym on Dec. 19, 2008. The win streak since then is 23, including 21 conference duals and two non-conference.

“They (Centennial) are our rival. They are still very good,” said Bartlett. “And for Rogers, the section rivals will be Centennial and Maple Grove.”

Hoover totaled 37.675 points, followed by Leah Perrault 35.80, Alana Embury 34.40, and Alyssa Walton 34.40.

Highlight for the Elks was everybody “sticking” the beam (no falls) — Hoover, Perrault, Embury, Walton and Alex Felt.

Another was Leah Perrault nailing a double-back on the bars and placing second with 9.05.

“We were five-for-five on varsity beam, and four-for-7 on JV. It was amazing,” said Barlett. “The girls worked hard this week and it paid off. We had some new skills on bars for both varsity and JV, and new skills on floor for varsity and JV.”

The Elks can close out another conference champ season when they host Anoka and Coon Rapids in a double dual next Tuesday.
