Basketball: Centennial overcomes Elk girls 65-50
Elk River took a 21-9 lead against a team they haven’t beaten in years, but could not hold Centennial down long as the Cougars came back to beat the Elks 65-50 on Thursday evening.
The host Elks were still within 41-40 with 10 minutes left before the Cougars pulled away.
Centennial was led by senior guard Kayla Becken within 17 points and sophomore guard Paige Waytashek with 16. Waytashek drilled four 3-point shots.
Makenzie Frericks sank 11 points, Jordyn Sohns 10 and Kayti Hanson 9 for the Elks (6-7 in the NWSC, 10-9 overall).
Centennial is 11-1 in the NWSC, trailing Osseo (11-0), and 15-2 overall.
Victoria Jenson and Annie Sizen scored 6 points each, Mikala Macomber 5 and Jenna Cielocha 3 for the Elks.
After playing the second-place team, the Elks will take on first-place, No. 5 ranked Osseo there on Monday evening.
