Hockey: Miller’s quick hat trick lifts Royals over M-A-ML 4-2

Chad Miller earned a pure hat trick in just 2 minutes, 34 seconds as the Rogers Royals held their Mississippi 8 lead with a 4-2 conquest of Monticello-Annandale-Maple Lake on Thursday evening.

Dylan Nelson gave M-A-ML the early lead with a power play goal in the first period.

But Miller rattled off three goals in the second period. He scored at 5:52 on the power play (assisted by Zach Hnath and Neal Smith), scored again at 6:55 (Phillip Ballard assisting), and again at 8:26 (Bryan Jungles, Andrew Smith assisting).

Miller, a 6-2, 200-pound senior, has eight goals for the season.

Blake Williams pulled Monticello within 3-2 at 2:15 of the third period. Hnath gave Rogers another two-goal lead at 16:11.

Rogers goalie Keaton Mumm stopped 27 of 29 shots. M-A-ML’s Aaron Boros stopped 29 of 33. Each team was 1-for-4 on power plays.

Rogers (8-6-1 overall) is the lone unbeaten in Mississippi 8 play at 4-0. The loss dropped M-A-ML to 2-2-1 and 6-8-1.

Rogers will host Princeton on Tuesday.
