Elk River, Rogers and Zimmerman will enter one-act plays in Minnesota State High School League district competition next Saturday, Jan. 29, in hopes of advancing to section and ultimately state levels.
The Star News will have more detailed reports next Saturday after we’ve seen previews or dress rehearsals. Following is a list of the plays and when you may see them.
Elk River will present “The Cowbird,” a drama of family conflicts in pre-war Nazi Germany, for competition, along with a second non-competition play, a comedy called “Romeo and Who’s Collette?”
The competition play will open at the Northwest Suburban Conference one-act play festival Tuesday, Jan . 25, at Centennial, at 2:15 p.m. On Friday, Jan. 28, and Saturday, Jan. 29, both plays will be presented for the public at Zabee Theatre, beginning 7:30 p.m. The district competition will be held earlier Saturday at Zabee Theatre, beginning 10 a.m. with ERHS taking the stage at 10:45 a.m.
The Rogers and Zimmerman plays will be performed today, Jan. 22, in the Mississippi 8 one-act festival at Cambridge-Isanti. Rogers will present “Us and Them” about two weary groups of settlers on the same land trying to work things out. Zimmerman will present “The Devil and Danielle Webster” (there’s a lady lawyer, hence Danielle and not Dan) about a man who sells his soul.
In the festival today, host Cambridge-Isanti will lead off at 8:30 a.m., followed by Princeton at 9:30 a.m., Rogers at 10:30 a.m., Becker at 11:30 a.m., Monticello at 1 p.m., STMA at 2 p.m., Buffalo at 3 p.m., Big Lake at 4 p.m., and Zimmerman at 5 p.m. An awards presentation will be held 6:30 p.m.
Zimmerman will also have a showing Monday, Jan. 24, at ZHS for the public, free of charge.
District competition for Zimmerman will be held at Pine City, beginning 9 a.m. on Jan. 29.
District competition for Rogers will be held at Anoka, both on Jan. 29.
