Rachel Bona went wild for five goals and two assists as the first-place Coon Rapids Cardinals outgunned the Elk River Elks 7-4 on Tuesday evening in Coon Rapids.
The Elks got a hat trick from Jonna Curtis but saw their win streak end at five.
Bona, a senior forward, had one shorthanded goal and one power-play goal while assisting on two other power-play goals, by Addie Rust and Amy Schlagel. She has 31 goals and 25 assists for the season.
The No. 9 ranked Cardinals are 15-4 overall and lead the NWSC with a 10-2 record, just ahead of Centennial at 7-3.
The Elks, who won the title last year but won’t repeat, are 7-5 in conference and 13-6 overall.
Two of Curtis goals came on power plays. Danielle Esperum had the other goal for the Elks. Curtis, Cassi Schreckenghaust, Cassey Petrich, Kayla Mills and Madison Ellis had an assist each.
Coon Rapids was 3-for-6 and the Elks 2-for-3 on the power play.
Lifted by Bona’s mastery, the Cardinals got seven of their 24 shots past Elk veteran goalie Samantha Geissler. Meanwhile Crysal Ammunrud stopped 21 of 25 for Coon Rapids, which swept the season series from the Elks. The Cards won the first meeting 5-1.
Bona nailed the first three goals of the game before the Elks got one by Esperum and the first period ended 3-1. Curtis notched her two power-play goals in the second period, before and after another Bona goal, in the second period.
Curtis knotted the score 4-4 with an unassisted goal 2:56 into the third period, her 28th of the season.
But the Cardinals took charge after that with goals by Schlagel, Bona and Rust.
Elk River will meet North Metro on Saturday, 3 p.m., in Brooklyn Park.
