Gymnastics star Sabrina Hoover of Elk River-Zimmerman-Rogers had a chance to compete against other elite high schoolers  Saturday at the Princeton Invitational.

“Sabrina loves the Princeton meet,” said coach Jenn Bartlett. “She kept saying this is her favorite meet, with really good competition.”

Hoover, two-time state all-around champion, was second all-around at Princeton with 37.75 points, behind Perham’s Kelsi Vomacka, who scored 38.10. Placing third was Chole Timm of Sauk Rapids-Rice, two-time state diving champion who this year got back into gymnastics after several years away. Timm scored 37.20.

Perham, top-ranked Class A team in the state and probably as good as any AA team, won the meet with 147.424 points, followed by Sauk Rapids-Rice with 138.10 and the Elks with 136.55, among 12 teams. The Elks were missing three gymnasts due to illness or injury.

Vomacka has been state Class A runner-up three times, including 2009 behind Hoover when the Rogers athlete competed in Class A. Hoover won Class AA last year.

In the Perham meet, Vomacka won floor exercise with 9.80, followed by Timm 9.75 and Hoover 9.70. Vomacka also won balance beam with 9.45, followed by teammates Mikaela Eickschen (9.35) and Satera Montella (9.05) with Hoover fourth (8.90).

On uneven bars, Hoover was the winner with 9.50, followed by Vomacka with 9.30 and Timm and Eickschen with 8.90’s.

Timm was the vault champion with 9.85 for a dazzling layout yurchenka. Perham’s Carly Peterson had 9.80 and Hoover was third with 9.65 for a back layout.

Next for the Elks, who are 4-0 in dual meets, is a conference match against Park Center at home on Thursday.
