Wrestling: Elks’ Eric Stevens beats 2 standouts to reach 100
Elk River senior wrestler Eric Stevens joined Elks’ 100-win club with a pair impressive victories this weekend.
On Friday night, Stevens cruised 12-2 at 140 pounds over Andover senior Sam Stewart, who is ranked No. 2 at 140 pounds, during a 60-12 win over the Huskies at home.
On Saturday, Stevens scrambled Coon Rapids junior Nathron Mix 11-2 during the Elks’ 34-25 loss to Coon Rapids there. Mix is ranked No. 3 at 130.
With 100-36 record, he becomes the 13th Elk in triple-digits, and second from his family. His brother Tyler graduated last year with 167 wins, tied for most in Elk history with Thomas McAlpine.
Stevens, ranked No. 8 at 140 pounds, is 11-3 this year.
He commented after the match that he had some nagging injuries earlier in the season but is hitting his stride now.
The Elks have two 100-win wrestlers in the current lineup, the other being Holton Lubinski with 113.
