Hockey: Curtis hits 4 goals, Elk girls top Grand Rapids 5-1

Jonna Curtis blasted four goals as the Elk River Elks beat another Iron Range team, Grand Rapids-Greenway, 5-1 at home on Friday evening.

Curtis, junior forward with 24 goals this year, scored in each period.

The Elks (11-5) are 4-0 against their northern Section 7AA rivals, previously beating Cloquet-Esko-Carlton 3-2, Proctor-Hermantown-Marshall 5-3, and Duluth Northern Stars 2-1.

After Cassi Schreckenghaust opened with scoring with an unassisted goal at 12:15 of the first period, Curtis did the same at 13:38.

Curtis added a power play goal in the second period, assisted by Josie Brown and Cassey Petrich. With the Elks up 3-1, she notched two more in the third period, the first assisted by Jordan McLaughlin, and the next by Sarah Thedens.

The GRR goal was scored by Bailey Rasmussen in the third period. The Lightning (10-7-1) actually outshot the Elks 27-23.

Samamtha Geissler made 26 saves for the Elks. Sydney Helmbrecht was in goal for the Lightning.

The Elks will play at Andover on Saturday at 3 p.m.
