Basketball: Hanson sparks Elk girls past Champlin 73-64

Senior guard Kayti Hanson poured in a career-high 21 points as the Elk River Elks outlasted the Andover Huskies 74-63 at home Tuesday evening.

Hanson, a four-year varsity veteran, had her first 20-point game.

She scored eight points an an early 17-0 run that gave the Elks a 19-7 lead. Andover pulled within 25-23 but the Elks regained control and led the rest of the way.

In the second half when Andover pulled within three, Hanson hit a 3-pointer from the top of the key, and, after a turnover, Jordyn Sohns hit another from the corner for a 9-point edge.

“Kayti had a great game,” said coach Reed Caouette. “She took care of ┬áthe ball really well and was aggressive going to the basket. She made some big shots.”

The Elks had four double-figure scorers.  Sohns and Victoria Jenson popped in 12 points each and Annie Sizen 11, with Makenzie Frericks adding nine. At the free throw stripe, Jenson was 8-for-9, Hanson 6-for-7 and Frericks 5-for-7.

The Elks have won three straight games and seven of eight, raising their record to 4-4 in the NWSC and 8-6 overall.

Haydn Becker scored 16 points and Haley Steinwand 13 for Andover (2-7 in conference and 6-7 overall).

The Elks will play at Park Center on Thursday evening.
