Nordic Ski: Elk teams in middle of pack at Mesabi gala

The Elk River Nordic Ski teams both finished in the middle of the pack at the massive Mesabi East XC Invitational on Saturday at Giants Ridge in Biwabik, site of the state meet.

Elk River boys placed 37th among 72 teams. Hopkins, Stillwater and Wayzata placed 1-2-3 in a very close race.

The Elk girls placed 32nd among 67 teams. Roseville Area won, followed by Duluth East and Stillwater.

Next for the Elks is the NWSC sprint races on Tuesday at  Elm Creek Park Reserve in Maple Grove.

How Elk boys fared

In the 5K classic race, senior Mitch Nordal led the Elks, placing 39th among 202 skiers. Freshman Breck Hickman placed 128th and senior Dallas Erdahl 139th. Team member Aaron Shaw, skiing for Rogers, placed 71s in 18:46.3

In the 5K freestyle, senior Kyle Kolles of Rogers was 60th among 194 skiers. For the Elks, junior Max Riebel was 77th, sophomore Joel Krueger 90th, and senior Max Peterson 125th.

How Elk girls fared

In the 5K classic, seniors Jane Kallemeyn in 60th place and Nicole Thorndal in 61st among 181 skiers led the Elks. Eighth-grader Reece Hickman was 158th.

In the 5K freestyle, sophomore Anna Haugen was 64th among 192 skiers. Senior Brittni Ellefson was 123rd, and sophomore Mallory Adams 135th.
