The Rogers Royals started strong but couldn’t keep it up against Cambridge-Isanti, losing 3-2 in overtime at home on Tuesday night.

Rogers had a 2-0 lead in the first period as sophomore Leah Benson fired a long shot from the right side that got past the goalie in the air, and eighth-grader Emily Antony added a goal from about 15 feet away on the left side of the net.

“We got up early, and stopped working,” said coach Scott Childers. “We got a little complacent.”

Meghan Eustice scored for the Bluejackets in the second period and Taylor Bowker tied the score in the third period.

In the overtime, the Royals had a power play but could not capitalize, and Alex Nelson hit the game-winner for C-I  on a rebound at the 4:00 mark.

Bluejacket goalie Jesi Benson stopped 22 of 24 shots, and Royal goalie Michelle Klimstra stopped 26 of 29.

The Bluejackets are 3-2-1 in the Mississippi 8 and 4-5-1 overall, and Rogers dipped to  0-2-0 and 6-7-1.

Rogers will play at Orono on Thursday evening.
