Hockey: Elk girls nipped by Blaine 3-2
Defending champion Elk River continued to struggle in conference play with a 3-2 loss to the Blaine Bengals on Tuesday evening in Blaine.
Cassi Schreckenghaust and Jonna Curtis scored for the Elks, who are 4-4 in the NWSC and 4-1 outside the conference.
The goals by Schreckenghaust (assisted by Cassey Petrich) on a power player and by Curtis (assisted by Madison Ellis) came in the second period.
Kiersten Falck and Katie Swanson both scored on power plays for Blaine (5-4, 6-7) in the first period for a 2-0 lead. Brittany Thunstrom’s goal in the second period put the Bengals up 3-1. The third period was scoreless.
Blaine was 2-for-6 and the Elks 1-for-5 on power plays. The Elks outshot Blaine 26-17. Tara Hoverstad stopped 24 of 26 for Blaine, and Samantha Geissler stopped 14 of 17 for the Elks.
Elk River will host Duluth Denfeld on Thursday evening.
