Kyle Weimann with a fourth-place finish was the highlight for the Elk River wrestlers in the Rumble on the Red hosted by North Dakota State on Wednesday and Thursday.
Weimann, a junior 285-pounder, posted four wins (including one injury default) against two losses. He beat a Totino-Grace foe on a last-second takedown at the edge of the mat to get into the third-place match where he lost to a Coon Rapids foe 9-4.
Jory Lubinsky, junior 215-pounder, was the only other Elk to make the podium (top eight), placing seventh with four wins and two losses.
There were 56 schools on hand with both varsity and JV tournaments.
Holton Lubinski had a 3-2 mark while Eric Stevens, Yong Yee Vang, and Zang Vang were all 2-2.
“Kyle had a great tournament. He had all closes matches and he wrestled smart,” said coach Paul Nelson. “This is a good experience for our team. We get a lot of matches and it’s good exposure.”
The Elks had to stay an extra night as heavy snow and 40-mph wind on Thursday delayed departure.
The Elks will resume conference competition on Thursday evening at Osseo.
