Basketball: Royal boys tip Prior Lake in OT, place 3rd

Rory Donovan led with 24 points as the Rogers Royals claimed third place in the Tartan holiday tournament with a 61-54 overtime conquest of Prior Lake on Thursday.

The Royals took the lead 49-48 on a 3-pointer by R.J. Dean in overtime, then pulled away sinking nine of 10 free shots.

Rory Donovan scored 55 points in the tournament.

The Royals (15-for-28 in the game) had been shaky at the line until OT when Donovan and Trevor Morlock each 3-for-3, Michael Schreiber 2-for-2 and  Dean 1-for-2.

Regulation ended 45-45. Rogers had the ball the last two minutes but threw it away before taking the shot in the final seconds.

Morlock netted 12 points and Dean and Schreiber 10 each for the Royals.

Mitch Hopkins tallied 15 points and Jon Sabaski 14 for Prior Lake (3-4).

Donovan, 6-foot-6 senior center, scored 55 points in the three games at Tartan and made the all-tournament team, as did Morlock, 6-4 senior guard who had 28 points in the tournament.

Rogers was 2-1 in the tournament and finished the 2010 portion of the schedule 5-2. The Royals will resume conference play at Zimmerman on Friday, 7:30 p.m.
