Basketball: Forest Lake stymies Elk boys 70-56

Riddled by turnovers, the Elk River Elks lost to Forest Lake 70-56 in the fifth-place game of the Tartan holiday tournament on Thursday.

The Elks shot 8-for-17 on 3-pointers and 6-for-6 on free shots, but committed 27 turnovers.

“Forest Lake had a 1-3-1 half-court zone and we had a terrible time attacking it,” said Elk coach Randy Klasen. “We had 27 turnovers, and our goal is (no more than) 12. It’s hard to compete with that many.”

Ben Erickson scored 17 points, Will Iverson 12, Clay Elrod 10 and Porter Morrell 8 for the Elks. Ivers, Morrell and Elrod each hit two treys. Ryan Ness scored 6 points and Tucker Morrell 3.

Senior guard Phil Hegseth drilled 22 points for Forest Lake (5-2), including five 3-pointers. Senior guard Evan Johnson added 17 points.

Elk River was 1-2 in the tournament and is 4-5 overall. The Elks resume conference play Tuesday at Anoka.
