13-year-old caught allegedly stealing

A 13-year-old is giving a pass after allegedly being caught stealing at Walmart, and two speed surveys don’t catch many speeders in Elk River.


13-year-old not given citation for theft
Due to a juvenile’s age, On Sept. 12 at 9:33 p.m. an employee at Walmart decided not to pursue charges after the boy was caught stealing a Bluetooth head set.

According to the police report, an employee watched the 13-year-old open a sealed package containing the head set, and then put the head set in his left rear pocket and continue on his way out the store. {snippet instory}

The head set was valued at $35.

Since the boy was with a parent when the theft was observed, it was determined parental discipline would be adequate.

The juvenile’s parent also ended up purchasing the head set.

Two traffic surveys don’t catch many speeders
Due to neighborhood complaints, an Elk River officer conducted a traffic survey on the 13200 block of 196th Avenue.

The survey took place on Sept. 10 at 3:14 p.m.

According to the police report, the survey went on for 40 minutes. During that time only four cars out of 43 cars were observed traveling more than 30 mph, with five miles over being the maximum recorded speed.

The next day, on Sept. 11 at 12:02 p.m., another traffic survey was conducted in the area of 193rd Avenue and Xavier Street.

This survey was also conducted due to resident complaints in the area.

Out of the 53 vehicles measured, only one was recorded doing 32 mph. Three more were recorded at 31 mph.

The speed limit in the area is 30 mph.
